Foreign Service Officer Killed in Haiti Earthquake

Victoria J DeLongA foreign service official crushed when her home collapsed in Haiti has become the first American identified among the victims of the devastating earthquake.

Victoria DeLong, 57, a cultural affairs officer at the U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince, had been stationed there about a year and had joined the State Department in 1983, ABC News reported.

Assistant Secretary of State Philip Crowley says 18 search-and-rescue teams from the United States and other countries are or soon will be at work on the ground in Haiti.

There is no official estimate on the number of deaths and informal estimates vary. The International Red Cross said Thursday the 7-magnitude earthquake likely killed 45,000 to 50,000 people.
